Triangles

We learned all about triangles today!  Although the students are already familiar with triangles, today we learned that they can be classified by the number of equal sides, and the measure of their angles.  To practice this idea, we used spaghetti noodles and marshmallows to build triangles.  We discovered that if 2 noodles were shorter than the 3rd noodle, we couldn't make a triangle.

Area & Perimeter

We have been learning about how to determine the area and perimeter of shapes.  Today we used grid paper and dice to review these concepts.  Students had to work with a partner to roll the dice, then draw the shape.  For example, if they rolled a 2 and a 3, their shape would have a perimeter of 10 and an area of 6.  They were challenged to fill the grid paper without leaving any open spots.  We had so much fun, we didn't even realize we were learning!  :)

Math Practice

To practice with A.M. and P.M. today, the students wrote down activities that they do each day on an index card.  Then we put them in a t-chart on the board.  Luckily, a few of the activities were done in both the A.M. and the P.M. (brushing teeth)!!

We LOVE Math!

Today in math, we used conversation hearts to compare fractions.  We counted the number of hearts in each box, then figured out which fraction of the entire box was each color.  Then we compared the different colors.  Of course, we got to eat them when we were finished!

Dividing by 2

Today in math we learned about dividing by 2.  I told the students that if any of them had a sibling, they were naturally inclined to divide things by 2 when they share.  In order to illustrate this point, I gave students a pack of Smarties and asked them to share with a partner.  They easily divided by 2, and I got the remainders!  :)

Skip Counting Songs

Remember that your child will be receiving a skip counting grade at the end of the week next week.  Most of our class still has a long way to go!  This was an assignment that was to be completed at home, not during class time.  I'm including a link to help put some of them to music.  Good luck!  :)

Number Lines

Today in math we learned to skip count on a number line in order to understand multiplication.  Students were asked to stand in different spots on a number line while holding groups of items.  This was a great visual for the number of groups, and the amount of items in each group!

Math Lesson 3.2

Today we related addition to multiplication.  Students used their iPads to group items and write an addition sentence for the groups.  We followed up by writing a multiplication problem to match.  Please note that in the above example, the first factor in our multiplication problem (the 4) is the number of groups, and the second factor in the problem (the 3) is the number of items in each group.  It is very important that the correct order is used.  Although 3x4 is also 12, our picture shows 4x3.  The addition and multiplication sentences need to match the picture.

Math News

We created a bar graph of our favorite sports today, then practiced solving problems using the information from our graph.  We also discussed the importance of having a title for a graph so we can understand the information.

Can You Figure Us Out?

Today we used our math facts to create posters all about ourselves.  See if you can figure us out!

Division Strategies

We will be wrapping up our chapter on division this week, and will be moving on to fractions soon.  Before our upcoming test, I wanted to share the division strategies that we have been working on in class so you can practice these at home.  I've created a short tutorial video for each strategy.  Enjoy!
